It’s summer– this means salt water, sun burns, swim suits and sunsets. During the summer, my beach bum/pirate/mermaid/princess identity is in full force. At any given time, on a day in June, you might find me walking with my dog to check the surf, harvesting some gooey fresh aloe, gluing gems to seashells, forgetting all about my professional persona. Isn’t this what summers are for?
My summer self faces a myriad of challenges that differ greatly from the challenges faced by my “professional self” of the fall or the spring. For one thing, I’m out in the sun a lot more in the summer time. My hair seems to always be salty. I’m extra thirsty, and I never feel like doing my nails (which is contrastingly always a highlight during a work week). Little things I take personal creative joy in while working, like picking out an eyeliner or the right bracelet, mean much less during the summer months.
In the summer, I try to balance a less rigorous beauty routine with a more rigorous skin care regimen.
10 Summer Time Beauty Hacks
1. Face protection ASAP. After I wash up in the morning, I immediately lather sunblock onto my face. This way I know my face is automatically protected. I like those powerful invisible zinc sticks. Make sure to put a coat on your lips and ears too.
2. Waterproof mascara. I like to have thick black eyelashes even out on the water. Sometimes, after a surf session, I might end up eating some fried shrimp somewhere, so I like knowing my eyes have a little “oomph.”
3. Long lasting lipstick. After the coat of sunblock I rubbed onto my lips is dry, I put on a coat of long lasting lipstick. I do not put the clear top coat that they typically come with. I find that the color lasts longer, especially on the beach, without it. Plus, any gloss on the lips is a bad idea for beach days; gloss attracts harmful sun rays to the lips.
4. Lather the sunblock early on. Once my face and some other chores are taken care of, I start the body sunblock routine. Rub that heavy waterproof sunblock in early, letting it really settle into the skin for it full benefits. Also, lathering the lotion on early, keeps you from slipping around on your surfboard like a sea lion; sunblock can be greasy especially if you put it on a few minutes before paddling out.
5. Make and stash lemon water in the fridge. Having refreshing lemon water encourages me to hydrate, and provides little shots of Vitamin C throughout the day.
6. Aloe vera everything. I even eat fresh pulp. It’s not enough to just rub it topically on sun burns; you really need to ingest the antioxidants too.
7. Affordable face shine control powder. Throw a little face powder in your beach bag (one that you don’t have to worry about losing) to blot out the resulting shine of strong sunblock.
8. Vitamin E cream. CVS makes a tub of Vitamin E cream that rescues me from the depths of salty dryness. It’s super affordable, allowing you to use as much of it as you like throughout the day. Vitamin E is a must for skin health and for fighting free radicals.
9. Own a nice and nourishing clear nail polish. If your nails are a little yellow, whiten your nails with some hydrogen peroxide, then paint your nails clear and shiny. This way you won’t have chipped nail color after a day at the beach, just a little shine with unnoticeable chipping.
10. Embrace beach hair to the max. Let mother ocean do your hair. Leave it salty and crunchy. Sprinkle baby powder or cornstarch on your roots to prevent unwanted shine.
