The Power of Skincare

While skincare/makeup may sometimes be associated with sexist or "man-pleasing" ideologies, it stands the test of time, evolving into profitable self care industry. In contrast to criticism from some feminists, today, the beauty industry empowers women-- in science, business, marketing etc. Powerful rulers in history, such as Cleopatra, found solace and respite in their skincare routines which included crushed rose petals, essential oils and honey.

“I’ve been inspired by so many people in my life but most of my drive comes from within, it’s just a burning desire to build mission driven, sustainable companies.” ~Karen Behnke

While skincare/makeup may sometimes be associated with sexist or “man-pleasing” ideologies, it stands the test of time, evolving into profitable self care industry. In contrast to criticism from some feminists, today, the beauty industry empowers women– in science, business, marketing etc.  Powerful rulers in history, such as Cleopatra, found solace and respite in their skincare routines which included crushed rose petals, essential oils and honey.

A 40 yr old pregnant California mom was understandably concerned about using skincare that included unnatural or toxic ingredients. Illustrating the phrase, “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself,” Karen Behnke created Juice Beauty. Every one of Juice Beauty’s products starts out with an organic botanical base, instead of being based in petroleum or mineral oil. There’s no parabens, pesticides or propylene (the three nasty “p”s).

The most desirable skincare products reflect Cleopatra’s reliance on nature; organic and nontoxic products unfortunately also reflect the high cost and luxury of a queen. One outstanding outlier in the industry is Juice Beauty which effectively balances the fruits of nature with affordability.

Even though Juice Beauty claims to be science based, after enjoying their products, Juice Beauty seems to be magic based! Their Stem-Cellular line features products that improve skin appearance after one use (I swear).

Fortunately, Karen Behnke is a much more relatable example of an empowered woman than Cleopatra. Her stuff works just as well as high end brands like La Mer, but is much more accessible. Cleopatra probably would have considered Juice Beauty a form of effective alchemy. In reality, it’s not magic, it’s just science, which seeks real and visible results.

After using Juice Beauty’s Stem-Cellular Resurfacing Micro-exfoliant, the discoloration in my forehead is less obvious, blurring more into my skin (like I said, magic!).
