White wine is a thick slice of your favorite birthday cake waiting for you in the fridge, a chilled, sweet taste of stress relief. After a long day, sometimes a handful of dark chocolate M&Ms or a good workout doesn’t quite cut it for me.
White wine is a very specific vice because other types of alcohol, like red wine, liquor or beer don’t appeal to me in the same way. In fact, if white wine didn’t exist, I’d like to think that my alcohol intake would significantly reduce. I’d probably be five pounds lighter with better skin and slightly more money in the bank without the crisp, buzz-inducing beverage.
Vino blanco seems to reduce my anxiety, which I hope you can relate to. Also, I rationalize that a glass or two of white wine has its health perks. For example, if I plop frozen antioxidant filled fruits into a glass, I think, The wine encourages me to eat more fruit! Or I’ll put an extra ice cube in the glass, you know, to boost hydration.
Alas, no matter how many chia seeds I swallow, the negative health effects of white wine persist. From weight gain to mood variances to dehydration, white wine could easily be coined an enemy. However, not a deadly one, right?
It’s been scientifically proven now for a while that white wine consumption increases a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer. This is something my mother never fails to remind me of. Typically, I look down, shrug her off and take an extra dose of folic acid the next morning. Folic acid legitimately lessens this increased risk for breast cancer. Although lately, my mother’s warning has been creeping up to the forefront of my thoughts as I pull out a corkscrew. The thought flies away as I drop six or seven antioxidant rich cherries into the glass. This oughta do it!
New studies show an even more dangerous association with white wine which affects both women and men. Drinking white wine can increase the chances of getting the dangerous skin cancer, melanoma. Steven Salzberg explains, “a daily glass of white wine carries a 13% increased risk of melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer” (Forbes). The danger is strictly associated with white wine, not red wine, gin or beer or any other booze you can think of (which is kind of surprising right?).
The more white wine you drink, the greater your risk of developing skin cancer. Another surprising piece of the danger is that the increased risk of melanoma is unrelated to sunlight. The melanoma was found on areas of the body that are less exposed to sun rays like your stomach. Surfer or scientist, all sorts of white winos are at risk (so, less time in the sun does not decrease the health risk).
As of right now, there is no white wine in my fridge. It’s departure is a nuisance, but I’m betting that it’s worth it. Maybe–depending on how everything goes– I’ll keep you posted.
Generally, the increased risk is not considered game changing to the experts. Weight gain for example is a far worse foe, so I don’t think white wine sales will fall. What do you think?
