Meandering around the skin care aisles of any store that sells beauty products, whether CVS or Nordstrom, one thing is certain: the best skin care products claim to be the most nourishing or the most natural. There are also the skin care companies that boast about the science and chemicals behind their products, but even these don’t forget to highlight their natural ingredients. Inspecting eighty dollar jars of face cream, I notice phrases like “made with real aloe” or “rich with antioxidants like vitamin C.”
You know what else is rich with aloe and vitamin C? My kitchen. My go-to phrase for skin care is “if it’s not edible, don’t put it on your skin.” Skin absorbs (at minimum) 60% of what you put on it. In some more delicate skin areas like the face, skin can absorb up to 100% of what you put on it (downtoearth.org). So, essentially, your body eats whatever you lather and layer it with.
Luckily, it seems that the most desirable ingredients in many facial products are found in my kitchen. Likewise, skin care and beauty companies are finally getting the full picture, realizing that what their customers smooth onto their skin directly affects their health. Thankfully, more contemporary skin care companies, like Juice Beauty or Lush, prioritize this connection between the epidermis and the insides . Essentially, the more natural a product is, the more edible it is, the better it is, not only for your appearance but also for your overall health.
6 Skin Care Faves Found In My Kitchen
Coconut oil. Typically used for cooking, coconut oil is also a majestic skin care item. It can be used as a makeup remover (it never irritates my eyes!), a moisturizer and a face or body wash. Mix it with salt for an outstanding exfoliant.
Lemon. Using a lemon for ice tea? Save the peel and rub it onto your dark spots. I leave the juice on for around fifteen minutes, and it helps lighten these dark splotches I have on my forehead from birth control called melasma. I’m also currently using it as a facial hair remover. There’s DIY recipes floating around on Pinterest that entail a small mixture of honey and lemon being placed on the undesired hair. It takes a a few weeks, so I’ll let you know if that works out.
Cucumber. They’re the biggest cliché when it comes to beauty in the kitchen and rightfully so. Cucumbers soothe sunburns and irritated skin. They also work very well as an eye brightener and a skin toner.
Honey. Honey helps to fade scars and treat acne. You can literally dab honey on a zit overnight, and then wake up to improved skin. Also, in regards to full body skin care, pouring honey into a warm bath can soothe the skin and calm the senses.
Tea tree oil. This stuff has a treasure chest of uses. Tea tree oil can be used in household cleaning products, laundry and pet cleansers. Most importantly, for this article, tea tree oil is an excellent, multi-purpose skin care product. It’s a natural antiseptic; this makes it an effective zit zapper, cut healer and deodorant.
Avoid the negative health effects of commercial deodorants and antiperspirants, which are full of pore clogging aluminum, with tea tree oil. The ingredients in your store bought deodorant do not allow toxins to flow out of the lymph-nodes; this raises the risk for breast cancer (and these antiperspirants tend to yellow your white shirts too). So, what I do it I place a few drops of tea tree oil on a cloth or cotton ball and rub it under my arms for a fresh scent and healthy feeling all day.
Aloe Vera. Besides cucumber, aloe is probably the best known of the edible beauty favorites. I harvest my own aloe at home which I eat. However, aloe works impressively well as a topical skin treatment that moisturizes, heals wounds and nourishes the skin with collagen and other typically expensive skin care ingredients.
