16 Days Until My Wedding

My wedding is 16 days away, and I can't even clearly express what's on my mind.

After these 16 days end, I’ll be a married woman (wtf?!). Describing myself as not only “married” but also as a “woman” feels surreal. Throughout the whirlwind of making plans, meeting vendors, and paying giant bills, I sometimes lose touch with the essence of the whole thing. Sitting back in my office chair, I find a …

15 Creative Canopy Beds

15 Creative Canopy Beds: The private, royal ambiance created by the canopy bed was not simply the product of my overactive five year old imagination. These beds were in fact designed to provide feelings of regality and exclusivity. Canopy beds were originally created for nobility, to maintain privacy regardless of the servants the slept all around them

On my fifth birthday, my mom took a photo of me in my flowery dress; my hair was pulled back in a bun like a ballerina. Seated on my brand-new canopy bed, I felt regal, elegant, special. I had my white mary-janes on; only part of my face is visible in the photo. I remember trying …

Why Canada Failed at Banning the Burqa

The issue of the niqab and the burqa has made its way up to the top political realms in Canada, apparently becoming a pivotal point in Canada's very recent election.

It’s an extremely controversial topic, in fact, it’s so controversial I wasn’t even sure I should write about it. Nonetheless, when separated from symbolism, this topic, which is so controversial, is literally about a piece of cloth. How is it possible that any fabric could carry so much weight that it causes inflamed international, political …

6 Things That Messy People Do to Stay Messy

I'm not the messiest person I know, but when things get busy, I'm a close second. "I like to have a cozy house with pretty things scattered around is how I think of it," is what I'll say to you.

I’m not the messiest person I know, but when I’m stressed out, I get closer to the throne. “I like to have a cozy house with pretty things scattered around is how I think of it,” is what I’ll say to you. I’ve said to my fiancé more than once, “I just like being able …

I Survived Yesterday’s Southwest Airlines Disaster

You would never believe this happened in today's efficient world. Manuel check-ins and dysfunctional customer service was the least of my worries.

There was one provision of water being handed to each of us. This singular can of water went down quicker than a shot of the pink lemonade vodka we had swigged last night.  Little kids with sweaty cherry cheeks clung to their parents’ pant legs trying to catch a crumb of shade. Basically, we, and …

The Hidden Shame You Carry in Your Trunk

As an artist, I work in a vulnerable state. As a person, I'm naturally sensitive. As a survivor, I'm naturally ashamed. Then here pops up Brene Brown on TED Talk with evidence, logic and experience at her side, explaining to the world that vulnerability rules and shame sucks. This I know. And this I deal with everyday.

If you watch one TED Talk, and you have Netflix, what happens next? You immediately watch another. Netflix automatically starts playing the following episode, so as a viewer you really aren’t responsible at all for the many hours you binge watch shows. As a result of this automatic play start, I’ve been watching a lot …

Maybe You’re Not Wasting Your Time After-all

I think in this poem, because it was a story, I stepped away from psychedelic imagery. I felt nervous almost. I hadn’t written a story in so long. It is a poem, but this particular poem needed to get its story out to work. During the process, I was fixated on conveying this tiny tale effectively–clearly.

I wrote some poetry today. It was coming out in full prose sentences, instead of trippy snippets, little short sentences that I felt inclined to snip apart at line breaks. Scrolling back up to read some of what I had just written, I noticed too many gerunds (-ing endings) and use of to be’s. The …
